Abstract

Background. At the present time there have been a number of transformations implemented in the field of social work, aiming at improvement of institutions and relations concerning social support and protection of socially vulnerable groups of population. The specific character of the given social services requires a high level competence of the present specialists, which is formed by means of professional training in the given field and by practice. The research goal is to analyze the necessary competences, which would allow to determine the professional knowledge, traits and behavior necessary for labor activity implementation.
Materials and methods. The work considers the importance of social work in society, adduces the results of the sociological research conducted by the method of questionnaire among the social work specialists from Penza.
Results. The research results show that for a social work specialist the most important competences are the ability to listen, responsiveness, unselfishness. Arrogance, proneness to conflict and emotional instability are unacceptable for rendering services in the social field.
Conclusions. High professionalism of the given category of workers of the social field is associated with the presence of both professionally important and personal traits. It is emphasized that the formation of professionally important traits is influenced by the social workers’ activity.
